Whether your business is big or small, I can say with complete confidence that you need a team! I love the quote from David Allen, “You can do anything, but you can’t do everything!” I know there is at least one thing right now on your to-do list that you want to delegate to someone else, but the question is who?! Who do you give it to?

I’ve been a business owner for over a decade now, and I have learned that every business owner needs at least one additional employee. I remember reading a quote that said, “If you don’t have an assistant, you are the assistant.” Basically, it’s saying, if you don’t have someone to do the $10/hr work, you are doing the $10/hr work. Every business has little tasks that pay too little for you to be doing!

I want you to take a moment to stop and assess your business. Which tasks are you doing that is currently paying you too little to do? Which tasks have you been avoiding and are something someone else can be doing? Let me give you a few ideas: social media management, graphic design, answering phones, answering emails, house cleaning, etc. You know these tasks are necessary, but you know you don’t have to be the one doing them.

Another way I have been able to work smarter and not harder is by growing leaders within! For example, in my brick and mortar business, we make sure that each employee has their area of expertise. This allows each employee to feel like a business owner while they are running their own department. You will quickly see as you hand off this responsibility, they become even stronger in their areas of expertise and are able to build the business with us. They see the vision of the company, the role their department plays and the results associated with their work. By doing this, we have raised up leaders within who are with us for the long haul. My dance studio incorporated approximately 12 years ago and we have one employee who has been with us 11 years, one who has been with us 10 years and multiple employees who have been with us 5+ years.

Once again, I want you to remember you can do anything if you will just stop doing everything! Make it a priority this summer to work smarter, not harder by delegating and growing leaders within.
